It is quite possible that Margaret Toshack Mc Gregorie married her friend and neighbor in Quassaick, William Sutherland, but she could NOT have done so in 1684, because she was then quite thoroughly married to Col. Patrick Mc Gregorie, leader, along with her brother David Toshack of the Scotch Presbyterian colonists who settled in the area ca 1686.

Col. Patrick Mc Gregorie was killed in the Leisler affair in 1691, at which time Margaret was driven from her home in Quassaick by her heartless, land hungry son-in-law Col. John Evans, and she went to live in New York city, where she appears on tax lists until 1699, living near a Lawrence family, presumably that of another daughter's husband. Tax lists- South Ward of NY "New York Tax Lists Vol I, 1695-1699 " Thomas Lowrense Mrs. Magregory

She then disappears from New York City and a Margaret is seen as ye goodwife of William Sutherland in Quassaick.

Histories of Orange County hint that the wife of William Sutherland was a Mc Gregorie. Since her name was known to be Margaret, and circumstances allow it, she may have been the widow of Patrick Mc Gregorie, Margaret Toshack.

However, the family history of "an early Sutherland" being married to a Mc Gregorie may very well have come from Mary Mc Gregorie, grand-daughter of Col. Patrick, being married to David the son of William Sutherland.

It is possible that Margaret Toshack may have been the mother of David Sutherland, and also possible that she was NOT the mother of the Patrick Mc Gregorie who was the father of Mary Mc Gregorie Sutherland, as there is the intimation that this Patrick was considerably older than the other Mc Gregorie children.

Regards to all,
